Durable and comfortable, skin-friendly and dirt-repellent: A Pilates mat from our PILATESSTAR line has all the features that make a good Pilates mat. The quality mats for Pilates training are available in different colors and designs. Find the perfect mat for your Pilates workouts.

Pilates Mat Basic

This Pilates mat is a good standard model that we offer in four different colors (red, cobalt blue, green and black). It is robust and retains its full suppleness and elasticity even after a long time. Like all our mats (including those in the yoga segment), it contains neither DOP nor AZO, so it is completely skin-friendly. The Pilates mat basic offers a comfortable thickness and a dense cell structure that provides great padding and a pleasant feeling when practicing. It successfully keeps the cold from the floor away and, above all, protects the joints. This Pilates mat is generously sized and has proven itself time and time again in practice. The Pilates mat basic was specially developed for Pilates practice, but can also be used as part of physiotherapy exercises. This Pilates mat is extremely popular and always a smart choice.

Pilates mat pro

The Pilates Mat Pro is the model for anyone who has very high demands on their mat and is particularly popular with advanced Pilates practitioners who train intensively. At the same time, it is also exactly the right model for anyone who wants an innovative, environmentally friendly material. The Pilates Mat Pro is made of TPE foam, an organically degradable material. The by-products that arise during production (all completely free of harmful substances) are also fully recyclable. It does not contain PVC, but is also not a rubber mat and can therefore also be used by people who are allergic to latex. This high-quality mat is an absolutely worthwhile purchase. The Pilates Mat Pro is available in three different colors (blue, cobalt blue and burgundy), with the blue version offering a greater thickness of 15mm than the other two color variants.

For Pilates beginners: Why do you even need a Pilates mat?

Not all Pilates exercises are performed on equipment such as the reformer or the various barrels. A large number of Pilates exercises are performed standing, sitting, or lying on your stomach or back. For this, you need a padded and hygienic surface in order to be able to practice pain-free and gentle on your joints. Some examples of such exercises are listed here:

What exercises can I do on the Pilates mat?

Many different exercises can be performed on a Pilates mat. Here are just a few examples:

  • Swan Dive
In the Swan Dive, you lie on your stomach on the Pilates mat and stretch your legs upwards and backwards, approximately shoulder-width apart, while your arms are stretched out in front of you. Now you rock back and forth on your Pilates mat. This exercise can almost be considered a full-body workout. It stretches and strengthens the back, among other things.

  • Spine Stretch Forward
This is an exercise that is performed while sitting: You sit on your Pilates mat with your legs stretched out in front of you and your feet flexed, stretch your arms out in front of you (parallel to your legs) and then slowly round your back. Make yourself tall or show length in your spine and at the same time lean forward until your fingertips are over your toes or even point beyond them.

  • Cat Stretch
This exercise, which is very beneficial for the spine, is based on the movements of a cat (especially the "cat's back") and is also known from yoga. You kneel on all fours on your Pilates mat and gently round your spine upwards.

  • Rolling like a ball
A Pilates exercise that strengthens the back and trains the sense of balance is “Rolling like a Ball”: You sit on your Pilates mat with your knees bent, pull your knees closer to your upper body with your arms, round your back and roll dynamically back and forth on the Pilates mat.

  • helicopter
This is an exercise from Standing Pilates, so you stand on your Pilates mat. The arms are first raised to shoulder height and then brought into a diagonal position with the palms facing upwards (one arm goes up sideways as you exhale, the other goes down to the opposite side; as you inhale, the arms return to the starting position). This movement is performed several times with power, alternating diagonals.

Note: The brief descriptions listed here do not replace detailed exercise instructions.

What features should a Pilates mat have?

A Pilates mat should offer good padding so that your joints are protected, movements are cushioned and you can practice comfortably. The Pilates mat should therefore not be too thin. At the same time, it should of course also ensure hygiene and therefore be dirt-repellent and easy to clean. After all, a lot of sweat flows during training, so the material of a Pilates mat must be easy to keep clean. The Pilates mat should be stable and durable and not become brittle, even if you use it every day and roll it up for storage. Last but not least, criteria such as skin-friendliness and freedom from harmful substances should be a matter of course.

What is the difference between a Pilates mat and a yoga mat?

There are two main differences between a Pilates mat and a yoga mat: A yoga mat is more slip-resistant and thinner than a Pilates mat. While the type of exercise in Pilates requires particularly good padding, i.e. a thicker mat, to protect the joints sufficiently, a yoga mat does not need to provide the same level of cushioning. For stability, for example in balance exercises, a mat that is thinner is actually more suitable. At the same time, you absolutely need grip in yoga, i.e. a mat that is as non-slip as possible. In Pilates, on the other hand, it can sometimes be helpful if you can slide a certain amount on the mat. This is why the surface of Pilates mats is smoother than that of yoga mats. From this comparison, it is clear that it makes sense to buy a Pilates mat, even if you already have a yoga mat.
