What is a Pilates resistance band, and what can I do with it?

The Pilates resistance band (also known as a flex band) is one of the newer Pilates accessories—meaning it was recently added to the repertoire of Pilates equipment. The genius of the Pilates stretch band is that it allows you to perform exercises that would otherwise require a Reformer or other large Pilates machines. The stretch band adapts various exercises from machine-based training for use on the mat, making them accessible even to Pilates practitioners who don’t have access to the corresponding, more expensive equipment. Similar to the metal springs on the Reformer, the Pilates stretch band also provides resistance that you must work against using your muscle strength, thereby strengthening your muscles. The range of exercises that can be performed with the Pilates Flex Band is diverse and extensive. Here, we can only outline a few examples to give you a first taste.

  • Example of exercises done while lying down:
For the One-Leg Circle, lie on the mat with one leg extended on the floor. Hold the Pilates resistance band with both hands, wrapping it around the foot of your other leg. Now extend that leg upward and use it to draw slow, controlled circles in the air. This mobilizes the hip joint and provides a good stretch to the inner thighs.

  • Examples of standing exercises:
The Pilates resistance band works very well, for example, for a lunge exercise. To do this, place one foot on the band (which you hold by the sides with both hands) and perform a deep lunge. As you pull the band toward you using your biceps, lower your bent knee even closer to the floor; then release the tension and return to the starting position. After 20 repetitions (you can, of course, do more or fewer depending on your individual needs), switch to the other side.
If you like to incorporate squats into your Pilates routine, you can also place both feet on the Pilates Flex Band and squat down while pulling the band upward over your head on both sides. Repeat this several times as well.

  • Example of a seated exercise:
Sitting on the mat, you can perform the following exercise, for example: Extend your legs straight out in front of you so that they are close together. Wrap the Pilates resistance band around both feet and grasp the ends with your hands. Now lean your upper body back and bring your arms forcefully behind your body. Return to the starting position and repeat several times.
You can even do a great arm workout while sitting in a chair by placing the band under one of your feet, holding both ends with the hand on the same side, and then pulling the Pilates resistance band upward using your biceps. Many other exercises on a chair are also possible with the Pilates stretch band.

Even this small selection of exercises shows that you can train a wide variety of muscle groups and achieve a wide range of benefits with the Pilates resistance band. By the way, the Pilates resistance band is used not only in Pilates training but also in physical therapy.

The Pilates resistance band is available in various resistance levels

Soft, medium, or strong—these are the three different resistance levels in which the Pilates resistance band is available. Which resistance level you choose depends on what intensity makes sense for you right now—if you’re already in good shape or if the muscle groups you primarily want to train with the Pilates stretch band are already well-conditioned, you can use a stronger band, whereas beginners or those who are, for example, cautiously resuming training after an injury should start with a softer band.

Three Pilates resistance bands at a special price: the resistance band set

If you’d like to own the Pilates resistance band in all three available strengths so you can vary your workouts (which is very useful, for example, if you want to train certain muscle groups with higher resistance while using medium or soft resistance for others), then grab this affordable resistance band set: This set includes all three resistance levels and also comes with two handles that make it easier to handle the Pilates resistance bands and make them more comfortable to use.

The Pilates resistance band is also available in a latex-free version

Good news for anyone with a latex allergy: The Pilates Flexband is also available from PILATESSTAR in a latex-free version made from the innovative material TPE, which poses no problems for people with allergies.

In addition to the Pilates resistance band, we recommend: the Dynamic Stretching Strap

Another great tool for enhancing your workout is the Dynamic Stretching Strap with its practical loops. As the name implies, this tool is all about stretching: If you want to do more than just static stretches—if you’re looking to incorporate dynamic stretching into your routine—it can be a real asset. Whether you want to work on your shoulders or improve the flexibility of your hips, for example, the Dynamic Stretching Strap can help you.

Straps for Pilates training

In addition to Pilates resistance bands, we also offer straps that originated in yoga: yogibelts. These can also be used effectively in Pilates workouts. Here’s a brief overview of how you can use these yoga straps:

A Yoga belt is very useful for bridging gaps—for example, between your hands when they can’t reach each other. The Yoga belt can also help you achieve more precise alignment in your poses. You can use the Yoga belt when you want to create tension and gradually deepen your entry into a yoga pose. You can even use the Yoga belt to optimize shoulder alignment. The Yoga belt can also be used for stretching.

You can find more details in our “Yoga Accessories” section under the “Yoga Straps” submenu. There, we’ve compiled a few examples of how to use the strap in various yoga asanas. Let these ideas inspire your Pilates workouts!
